National Get Up Day

The U.S. Figure Skating started this amazing and motivating initiative to help people overcome their losses when they fall. It started February 1st, 2016 and every year since then, the day has been celebrated. It's become a day where people worldwide share their stories of loss, failure, and overwhelming odds to inspire hope, perseverance, determination and good old grit.

February 1st marks the official end of the national skating month (January) and is marked by the coupling of skating communities worldwide. Like everyone who has ever lived, each skater learns that one of the first lessons is how to get back up when we fall. Though, this day began within the skating community, it finds a way to resonate deeply with everyone worldwide. National Get Up Day is about celebrating the spirit of upliftment, grit, and determination which applies to every aspect of life, not just skating. People around the world take this day as an opportunity to share stories, photos, videos, and social media to inspire people to get keep going even in the face of adversity.

How to celebrate Get Up Day?

The great thing about this holiday is that you can celebrate it in any way you'd like.

  • Go outside, enjoy nature, go to the lake - I suggest #lakemcconaughy (hehe)

  • reading that book you've been wanting to get to for the last year, watch a documentary, conduct an experiment, challenge yourself to learn something new.

  • taking the day to work on yourself--take a bath, have a spa day, exercise, meal plan, etc.

  • write something about something you have heard, or learned of the significance of the day for you

  • share knowledge that helps somebody; motivational note: it will also brighten somebody's day

  • observe global issues that resonate with you. How would you repair it? Discuss and Debate with your peers and family, post on social media using #NationalGetUpDay

  • take the time to draw, paint, create, design, bake, craft

Interesting Facts About Get Up Day

During an appearance in the NBC Today show by the Olympic figure skating gold medalist Scott Hamilton the concept was introduced and has been trending worldwide ever since. In the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea, National Get Up Day was celebrated right before the Olympics began. The hope with National Get Up Day was to foster skaters' ambition, robustness, and power.


How to Persevere Through the Hard Times

Lifehack.org has this to say, "The only way for us to live our lives to the fullest is to learn how to have perseverance and deal with the challenges that life throws at us. Surviving these curveballs and pushing through adversity, pain, and feelings of hopelessness and despair are part of the journey for us to learn about who we are.
