As someone who nannied for nearly seven years, Valentine's Day activities were some of my favorite activities to do with the kiddos, especially when it's too cold to go outside.

It's so easy and simple to create fun activities for the kiddos, add some color to the winter months, and teach them the value of making gifts from scratch.

Melted Crayon Heart Paintings

What You'll Need...

White Paper

Foil Lined Cookie Sheet Old Towel Oven Mitt Crayons Watercolor Paint Paint Brush Vegetable Oil

Instructions

Preheat an old cookie sheet lined with foil in a 350F oven.

While the cookie sheet is heating up, protect your work surface by laying down an old towel.

When the cookie sheet is heated up, place it on the towel and give your child an oven mitt to protect the hand they’re not drawing with.

Lay a sheet of paper over the cookie sheet and draw hearts on the paper with crayons. The crayons will melt as they draw.

Once the crayons stop melting, put the cookie sheet back into the oven to reheat. Repeat as many times as you’d like.

Coffee Filter Hearts

What You'll Need...

  • Coffee filters

  • Watercolor Paint

  • Paint Brush and Water

  • Glue Stick

  • Scissors

  • Work Tray

Instructions

  • Fold and Cut coffee filters into hearts. Start by folding the coffee filters in half and cut out half heart shapes from them. You can easily do this ahead of time so you can get right to cutting out shapes.

  • Fold and cut designs Fold and cut the hearts as you would paper snowflakes

  • Paint with watercolors Carefully paint your hearts with watercolors. You can moisten the hearts first and then dab on watercolors, or paint straight on the dry filters.

  • Hang your hearts! Finally, you can use a little glue from a glue stick to hang your hearts on the window. Don't worry--the glue easily washes off.

Glitter Rock Valentines

What You'll Need...

  • Small rocks (either gather them from outside, or buy river rocks)

  • Glue

  • Glitter

  • Paint brush

Instructions

  • Prepare your rocks. If your rocks come from the outdoors, scrub them briefly, rinse them, and spread them out on a cookie sheet in a hot oven for a few minutes to dry. If you gather rocks from a wet area, such as a stream, do NOT put them in the oven as the moisture may make them explode.

  • Prepare your other materials. Pour your glue into a small dish or bowl. If your glitter container doesn't have a shaker top, you can pour the different colors into small containers, too.

  • Paint your heart with glue. Use a fine paint brush to paint a heart on a rock with glue.

  • Apply Glitter Sprinkle your wet glue heart with glitter. Then, shake off the excess glitter form the rock.

Threaded Heart Paper Plate

What you'll need...

  • paper plate

  • sheet of paper

  • hole punch

  • pencil

  • thread (red and white twine works out great)

  • scissors

Instructions

  • Cut an 8 x 8 piece of paper from your scrap paper, fold in half, and cut a large heart out on the folded line.

  • Trace your heart onto the plate and cut out about a 1/4″ larger than your traced line.

  • Punch holes all along the traces line with your hole puncher about 1/2″ space in between each punch.

  • Weave the end of your twine in and out of your holes until you reach where you started and tie the two ends into a knot.

  • Then weave a new piece of twine into the back of any hole and through the front of any top hole across, weave through the back of the neighboured hole and repeat until your plate heart is filled up as much as you’d like.

Shaving Cream Heart Art

What You'll Need...

Instructions

  1. Line your workspace or table with butcher paper, newspaper, or something that is disposable.

  2. Add shaving cream to your shallow pan.

  3. Add paint and use your skewer to swirl around.

  4. Place your paper down the shaving cream with paint, remove, and then use another piece of cut paper to wipe off the excess shaving cream. Repeat with more paper, add more paint if needed.

TIP: to get more marbled effects use less paint on the shaving cream. We just created this again to show you how if you watch the video and see these updated photos below!
